CaptureYou’ve probably heard the term “SEO” mentioned at some point during discussions about advertising and marketing plans for your business. Maybe you even nodded your head in agreement. “SEO, yes! That sounds great,” you said. But do you know what SEO really is?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Does that help? Didn’t think so.

The short answer is that SEO is the practice of improving and promoting a website to increase the number of people who visit the site via search engines like Google or Yahoo.

The long answer is that the practice of SEO involves SERP analysis, keyword research, microdata, and HTML code to ensure that your website can be easily found by search engines and people. It’s not a one-time fix, it’s an on-going process that can’t guarantee overnight results (so be wary of any company that promises this!).

So how can you, as a business owner / marketing whiz start practicing SEO?

  1. Include keywords that are important to your business within the text of your website.

  1. Include proper microdata and tags in your website code.

  1. Build links!

Get links to your website on other relevant websites. This tells Google and other search engines that your website contains information that is relevant. But please, never purchase links. That tells Google that you’re a cheater and let me tell you - Google doesn’t like cheaters.
